Text Box:      Although care taking has its rewards, it’s not unusual for family members to take time off from daily responsibilities from time to time.  Families may ask a neighbor, a relative, or a friend to care for their loved one.  While informal systems meet the needs of most situations, when a family member is medically fragile, or emotionally, behaviorally, or physically challenging, finding respite care can be difficult.
A family that is in need of a trained provider will find that resources are limited.  In most cases it will be the family’s responsibility to locate, hire, and train a potential provider.  The process can be overwhelming however, it is important to take your time and shop around.

Text Box:  The following list of questions may help families find a provider that meets their unique needs:

· Are you willing to have a criminal background check?
· How would you encourage cooperation?  What would you do if my family member refused to cooperate with you?
· What would you do if emergency care were needed?
· How should we communicate about issues?
· Do you have any specialized training?
· How long have you been providing respite care?
· Do you have references from other families?
